A hormone produced by the pituitary gland. In
males, it stimulates the testes to produce
androgens. In the female menstrual cycle, it
works together with follicle stimulating
hormone to initiate production of egg cells
by the ovary. If fertilization of the egg
cell occurs, it plays a part in maintaining
the pregnancy by controlling the levels of
oestrogen and progesterone in the body.
